The new facility for the Süd Kriens portal should no longer be an obtrusively large building that is perceived as a barrier in the adjoining residential neighbourhood. Our proposal envisages the development of an elegant, open bridge structure with a covered area and a suspension bridge construction, on which a new, central and connecting green park space is established.
The planned bridge has two expansive, open arches creating an inviting gate to the neighbouring city of Kriens. The bridge’s language and scale refers to engineering works without competing with the scale of the surrounding architectural buildings.
The new bridge structure provides tunnel transitions, bridgeheads, crossings over Luzernerstrasse and the Esplanade, the covering structure and a connection to the cycle-route network. The formal and spatial design of the facility adopts a holistic approach. The result is an overall figure that fulfils high demands with respect to function, economics, construction, urban planning and architecture. With its glazed apertures, the large-scale suspension bridge structure has a transparent, permeable appearance, creating a portal expressing openness towards Kriens and Lucerne. The glazed openings also ensure a pleasant atmosphere and soft light-transitions from the tunnel to the open street area for car passengers.
The facility’s uniform materialisation in fair-faced concrete with a board structure creates a powerful large-scale form that can nevertheless solve the demands of the different construction stages in differentiated ways.
