The quality of the building site is characterised by its exposed location on the Hertenstein peninsula, surrounded by Lake Lucerne with views of the Bürgenstock, Rigi and Pilatus mountains. The building is unobtrusively situated in the rear area of the existing Campus Hotel Hertenstein on the saddle between the Tanzenberg and the Victoria Rock.
The structure combines the large scale of the hotel buildings with the fine-grained settlement structure and architecture of the surrounding buildings. This is also achieved by the balcony layer in front and the rod-like, vertical façade structure. It is inspired by the finely structured surrounding wooden buildings. This qualified the size of the building and adds spatial depth to the volume.
The main access to the new building is via the ground-level entrance floor, which contains the reception, necessary service areas and rooms. The three upper floors with the rehabilitation clinic rooms are reached via the central access core. The three-storey car park is also connected via this core. Another additional access core connects the new building to the rehabilitation rooms in the intermediate building.
In reference to the historical wooden buildings in the surrounding area, the façade's materiality and rhythm is based on their delicate, high-quality structures. The façade is made of anodised aluminium, which has a similar colour and structure to the wooden buildings of the old hamlets.
