From an urban perspective, the centre of Lustenau can hardly be recognised as the municipal centre in terms of density and structure. In addition to the church and the community centre, the new market hall now presents a third public position on the village square. The project implements the idea of a market hall and unites various uses and designs under a large, all-covering roof. The roof limits the open space towards the sky and refers to the axis of the village square, which is aligned towards the front façade of the church. Following the image of a hall, the building should have the effect of being light and transparent. Since the use of wood was logical due to the local carpentry tradition, the architectural expression of lightness was achieved through a combination of wood and artificial materials. The transparencies are remarkable in revealing the connections between the various building elements, which are arranged in a sequence. Natural and artificial light transform the building’s expression in diverse ways depending on the time of day.
