An existing single-family home constructed in 1960, situated outside the building zone in an exceptional landscape with fine trees, needed a radical conversion to fulfil new user requirements. The design was developed out of hidden qualities that already existed on the original grounds. The overall volume was expanded and homogenised. The house, basement, garages and chimney form a new, uniform volume that is permeated by the terrain. The plot’s spatial interlocking with the exterior space was consolidated by extending the building’s wings, thereby also framing the entrance forecourt and garden space more strongly. The interior floor plan was redesigned. The eastern wing accommodates the bedrooms, while the living and dining rooms are situated in the south. The connecting wing houses the main entrance with an adjoining library room. The regular arrangement of the windows on the façade facing the garden courtyard form a band along an internal circuit walkway, thereby providing attractive views into and out of the building. The other, large-scale windows stage the beauty of the landscape and complement the spatial quality of the simply proportioned interior spaces.
